UMGC Linux Operating System Analysis

1) I didn’t know Linux was the world’s most dominating operating system. I thought Windows dominated the world and had the highest percentage of the market. I found the case study interesting because of the amount of developers and companies that contribute to Linux. What’s interesting about this is, there are a huge amount of individual developers or ideas that are able to freely help improve Linux. The development of Git was also interesting and showed Linus Torvald still played a huge roll with improving Linux. The results demonstrated the impact Linux has had across the world. I would have to see information about Windows alongside this, but after reading the results, it appears Linux has taken over certain industries and will continue to grow. At the rate it is growing, I believe Linux will one day be the operating system of the world. When we think of computers today, we are really thinking of Windows. In the future, we may think of Linux when the topic of computers are brought up. My mind still has not changed after reading the case study. I found the study really interesting, but at the moment, I’m still a Windows OS person. I don’t see that changing. Its like a habit. It would take me many years to break my relationship with Windows.

2) Found it interesting that in the 90’s it was like a world race to change Linux from an open source and make it proprietary which I can only imagine if such an event occurred. Even comparing todays internet usage to the 90’s, I know for certain it has risen exponentially so it would make sense for those to try and benefit from its demand and of Linux. Never would have thought a system like Linux would be in such high demand back then but it seems like the world was trying to get a piece of it.

From reading the article, Linux should always remain an open source system, “The Linux kernel is simply a building block that helps create and deliver an OS for running applications. Developing a non-differentiating technology through shared research and development frees up resources for companies to develop high-value applications.” found this interesting, a building block where anyone can improve it and modify it to their own use or improving it somehow.

I did not realize the importance of Linux. From seeing the results and impact of Linux today, I wonder different the world would be if it was never developed or Linux was not as advanced today. Smartphones, Supercomputing and financial markets would probably not be as useful or accessible without the advancements of Linux.
