Multimedia Decades Later Still Asking: Would I Pull That Switch Discussion Responses

Social psychology’s most famous experiments expose human nature and force the     question:  Would I really do that? Could I betray my own eyes, my judgment, even  my humanity, just to complete some experiment. Moreover, t    he  answer, if it’s an honest one, often gives rise to observations about  the cruelties of the day, whether suicide bombing, torture, or hate  crimes. And so an experiment — a mock exercise, testing individual  behavior, like Milgram’s — can become something else, a changing prism  through which people view the larger culture, for better and for worse.       

   In  this discussion-group posting, tell your group members what you would do  if you were a subject in the Milgram experiment. Where would you stop  in the base-line set-up? Then, regarding the paragraph above, what do  you think the experiment tells us about human nature? Then view the  postings and comment on them, agree or disagree, and why.

you’ll respond to two students’ posts. here is oneIn one paragraph, respond to;What you would do if you were a subject in the Milgram experiment? I needed money to feed someone I loved then I would do anything including the Milgram experiment.  Where would you stop in the base-line set-up?  It

 honestly depends on how badly I needed the money. If I didn’t really 

needed it then I would stop and if I did then I would keep going What do you think the experiment tells us about human nature?  In

 history, we have something called “historical empathy” which is about 

understanding the circumstances that lead people to do what they do or 

don’t do.  In social psychology, the most important lesson is that the number one driver of behavior is circumstance. So I guess this experiment reminds me of how all the social sciences are related

 am not sure if I would continue because I don’t think I can handle 

seeing someone in so much pain. I definitely don’t have a problem saying

 no to others or even with higher authority than me. I don’t care who 

you are but if it goes against what I believe than I wont do it. If its 

not something I would do than I wont do it for others entertainment. If I

 can’t handle seeing some one in pain, then I will stop. I would rather 

take the pain myself than let some one else do it. I will tell you this 

though, if I needed the money then I would keep going and I wouldn’t 

stop. I would have to be in super need of it though. 

Hello, please the posted you responded to has already received enough responses. Please respond to the above, 1 and this one below, 2. Please do it first2.To be honest, I really don’t know if I would have continued as 

long as most participants did. Of course I’m more likely to fall prey to

 the social psychology that the other participants experienced, pressure

 and validation from authority, but knowing myself, I really don’t think

 that would matter to me. I know what makes me uncomfortable and what I 

am comfortable doing, and I really think that once I learned of the test

 subject’s “pain” that I would have stopped. I don’t have a problem with

 saying no to people, or authority figures, if it really makes me 

uncomfortable or go against what I believe.
